How Long Do THC Drinks Take to Kick In?

Quick answer: Most THC drinks take 15 to 45 minutes to kick in, and some people wait an hour or more. Effects usually peak around 60 to 90 minutes and taper over 2 to 4 hours. In Maine, a single serving can hold no more than 10 mg of THC, so a 2.5 mg or 5 mg can is the easiest place to start. Sip, wait 20 minutes, then decide.

"Fast-acting" on a can is a comparison, not a promise. A drink is often quicker than a brownie. It is not a joint.

How long do THC drinks take to kick in?

For most adults, a THC drink starts to register 15 to 45 minutes after the first sips. A real minority feel nothing for an hour, and a few feel very little on a low dose.

The best real-world data we've seen is from MoreBetter, a consumer research firm that tracked more than 2,500 adults logging their own drink sessions over three weeks. About 52% felt effects within 11 to 40 minutes, and roughly 30% felt them after 40 minutes or barely at all. It's self-reported, not peer-reviewed and not broken down by dose, so treat it as a snapshot.

Maine's rules land on the cautious side. Every edible label in the state, drinks included, must warn that effects can take up to 4 hours (18-691 CMR ch. 30). Plan for that worst case.

Why do THC drinks usually work faster than edibles?

Because the THC is already broken into tiny droplets that mix into water, instead of sitting in a fatty chocolate or gummy your stomach has to digest first.

THC is an oil. Left alone, it floats on a drink like olive oil on soup. Beverage makers use emulsifiers, often with ultrasonic or high-pressure mixing, to shear it into very small coated droplets that disperse in water. That's what "nanoemulsion" and "water-soluble THC" mean on a label.

The honest part: much of the evidence for faster onset comes from companies that sell emulsion technology, or from small pharmacokinetic studies (often 12 to 32 people, some industry-funded) that measure blood levels rather than how people feel. Independent reviewers, including a research roundup from The Cannigma, point out that the trials are small and that a higher blood peak doesn't guarantee a more predictable experience. We think drinks are usually quicker. We don't buy the "5 minute" claims some brands print.

Drinks still pass through your liver, which is why they last hours. Our guide to how long edibles take to kick in covers that side, 11-hydroxy-THC included.

Drinks versus other ways to consume

Format Typical first effects Typical peak Typical duration
Smoked or vaped flower Within minutes 15 to 30 minutes 1 to 3 hours
THC drink (emulsified) 15 to 45 minutes, sometimes 60+ 60 to 90 minutes 2 to 4 hours
Gummy or chocolate 30 minutes to 2 hours 2 to 3 hours 4 to 8 hours

Your body, your tolerance and your dinner all move these numbers.

Does an empty stomach or carbonation make a THC drink hit faster?

An empty stomach probably does, a little. Carbonation might, but nobody has published a test of it with THC.

On food, a 2020 study of 28 adults in Edmonton, published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, found that oral THC taken after a high-fat meal kicked in later but produced higher blood levels than THC taken fasted. Slow start, stronger finish. Classic setup for a second can you regret.

Carbonation is murkier. A 2007 study in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine found 14 of 21 adults absorbed alcohol faster with a carbonated mixer than with still water. Brands borrow that result for THC. Maybe. We couldn't find a cannabis study, so file it under plausible, unproven.

Our take: eat a light snack, not a feast, and keep your routine steady so you learn your own pattern.

How much THC should be in your first drink?

Start at 2 to 2.5 mg if you're new or it's been a while, and treat 5 mg as a full serving for most occasional consumers. Maine caps a single serving at 10 mg.

Dose Who it tends to suit What the night often looks like
2 mg First-timers, people THC tends to make anxious A soft lift, easy to talk through.
2.5 mg Beginners, and people who like two or three over an evening Relaxed and chatty. A second can later stays manageable.
5 mg Occasional consumers who know how edibles treat them A clear buzz. Laughs come easier, and the couch gets more appealing by hour two.
10 mg Regular consumers with some tolerance Strong for most people. Stay put, skip the second drink, give it 4 hours.

That's what customers commonly report, not a guarantee. Two people on the same 5 mg can have very different evenings. If the label math confuses you, our walkthrough on how to read a Maine cannabis label shows where mg per serving and per package sit.

How do you pace a THC drink?

Sip, wait 20 minutes, decide. Drink a third to a half of your serving, put it down, set a timer and check in before you touch it again.

The sip, wait, decide method

  1. Sip. Drink part of the can over five or ten minutes. Note the time.

  2. Wait 20 minutes. Have seltzer in the meantime. A second THC drink doesn't count as seltzer.

  3. Decide. Feeling it? Stop, or finish slowly. Feeling nothing? Have a bit more of the same serving and wait another 20.

  4. Hold the line. Don't open a second can until at least 90 minutes after you started the first.

Twenty minutes is just a checkpoint you'll actually keep. The 90 minute rule does the real work, because the slow tail of the onset range is where people overdo it.

How do you split a multi-serve THC bottle?

Use the measuring device that comes with it. In Maine, multi-serve drinks can hold up to 200 mg in total, no more than 10 mg per serving, and must include a measuring device for exactly this job.

Single-serve cans top out at 10 mg and need a child-resistant or crown cap.

Say a bottle is labeled 100 mg across 10 servings. One marked pour is 10 mg, a lot for a newcomer. Half is 5 mg. A quarter is about 2.5 mg. Pour into a glass, top up with seltzer, and put the bottle away.

Shake it if the label says to, since emulsions can settle. And store it where nobody could mistake it for soda; our tips on keeping your stash away from kids apply double to drinks.

Why are THC drinks such a social format?

A drink gives your hands something to do, you sip at your own pace instead of passing something around, and nobody has to smell smoke.

That's why our Social menu leans on beverages. Our THC mocktails post starts from low-dose bases, the fall beverages guide works in cider and warm drinks, and getting social with cannabis covers hosting etiquette.

One Maine reality check: public consumption is a civil violation, fine up to $100, and a can at the beach counts. Our guide to where you can use cannabis in Maine sorts out the private spaces that work.

Should you mix THC drinks with alcohol?

Our advice is no. The combination tends to hit harder than either alone, and it makes pacing much harder to judge.

A 2015 study led by Rebecca Hartman in Clinical Chemistry found that adding a modest dose of alcohol to vaporized cannabis produced higher peak THC blood levels than cannabis alone. That was vapor, not drinks; research on drinks plus alcohol is thin. Reviews of driving studies generally find the pair impairs more than either on its own.

Alcohol also dulls your read on how high you are, and your THC drink may not have peaked when the beer lands. People spinning on a friend's couch usually had two things at once, not one drink too many. If you mix anyway, keep THC at 2.5 mg or less, alcohol to one drink, and go slowly.

Never drive after either. Maine handles cannabis impairment under its OUI law (29-A §2411), and no THC number makes you safe to drive. If you take medications or have a health condition, check with a healthcare provider first.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 5 mg THC drink take to kick in?

A 5 mg THC drink usually starts working within 15 to 45 minutes, though some people wait an hour or longer. Effects tend to peak around 60 to 90 minutes and fade over 2 to 4 hours. Start with part of the can, wait 20 minutes, and wait 90 minutes before a second.

How long do THC drinks last?

Most people describe THC drink effects lasting 2 to 4 hours, with the strongest stretch around the one to two hour mark. In one large self-reported study, 57% of participants said effects lasted one to three hours and about 20% said longer. Higher doses and a heavy meal can stretch that.

Are THC drinks stronger than edibles?

Not by default. A 5 mg drink and a 5 mg gummy contain the same THC. Drinks often feel quicker and sometimes shorter because the THC is emulsified into tiny droplets. Much of the faster-onset research is small and industry-funded, so dose by the milligrams on the label.

What is the Maine THC limit for drinks?

Maine treats THC drinks as edibles. A single serving can hold no more than 10 mg of THC and a package no more than 200 mg. Single-serve drinks up to 10 mg need a child-resistant or crown cap, and multi-serve drinks up to 200 mg must include a measuring device so you can pour one serving.

Can I drink a THC beverage with alcohol?

We don't recommend it. A 2015 Clinical Chemistry study found alcohol raised peak THC blood levels when combined with vaporized cannabis, and reviews link the combination to greater impairment than either alone. If you mix anyway, keep both doses small, go slowly and never drive.

Why can't I feel my THC drink?

It may not have peaked yet, the dose may be too low for your tolerance, or a big meal may be slowing absorption. Wait at least 90 minutes before a second serving. If 2.5 mg never registers, try 5 mg on a different night rather than doubling up.

A good night on a THC drink is mostly patience and a small first pour. When you're ready, browse the beverages on our online menu and order ahead for pickup, or come by and ask a Guide which can they'd hand a friend.
