Quick answer: A THC drink is a sealed can or bottle of water, seltzer or tea with a measured dose of THC mixed in. Most people feel a light shift at 2 to 5 mg, a clear high at 10 mg, and a heavy one at 20 mg. Onset is usually faster than a gummy. Effects vary by person.
Key takeaways:
-
Maine caps an edible or drink serving at 10 mg THC and a package at 200 mg (Title 28-B, section 703).
-
Drinks often use a nanoemulsion. Lo Friesen, writing in Cannabis Science and Technology in 2024, puts those droplets at 20 to 200 nanometers.
-
Smaller droplets mean more surface area, which is why a can tends to arrive sooner than a brownie.
-
Dry mouth, a faster pulse and a bigger appetite are the three physical effects people forget to plan for.
-
Maine labels must warn that effects may not be felt for up to four hours (18-691 CMR ch. 30).
THC drinks effects at a glance: what does each dose do?
A THC drink is a beverage with a known milligram dose of THC emulsified into it, sold sealed and labeled. The table below is what our regulars on St John St actually report back, not a lab result. Use it as a starting point, then adjust for your own body.
| Dose in one serving | What people commonly report | Usual onset |
|---|---|---|
| 2 mg | A small lift. Easy to miss entirely. | 15 to 45 minutes |
| 5 mg | Body ease, a light head change, more talkative | 15 to 45 minutes |
| 10 mg | A clear high. One full Maine serving. | 15 to 60 minutes |
| 20 mg | Strong. Two servings. Easy to overshoot. | 15 to 60 minutes |
Two things move those rows a long way. The first is tolerance. The second is whether you ate.
On an empty stomach, a 5 mg can can read like 10 mg. After a full dinner, a 10 mg can may feel polite. For the mechanics, see our guide to what THC drinks are.
What does a 2 mg or 5 mg THC seltzer feel like?
At 2 mg most people report almost nothing, and that is the point. It is the dose for someone who wants to hold a cold can at a cookout and stay completely level.
At 5 mg the change is real but small. People describe loose shoulders, a slower pace of thought and a bit more laughing. Music gets more interesting. Driving is off the table.
This is the band we steer first timers into. Half a 10 mg can also works. Pour it, cap it, wait.
What does 10 mg or 20 mg feel like?
Ten milligrams is a proper high for most people, and it is one legal serving in Maine. Expect a clear head change, warmth, an appetite and a loose sense of time.
Twenty milligrams is two servings. People who are not used to it describe heavy limbs, a racing mind and sometimes a short wave of unease.
Here is the honest trade-off. A fast drink also lets you misjudge the pace. Our guide on how long THC drinks take to kick in explains why the first 20 minutes fool people, and our piece on how long the effects last covers the tail end.
Why does 10 mg in a drink feel different from 10 mg in a gummy?
Because the THC is already broken into tiny droplets before it reaches your gut. A gummy has to be chewed, melted and digested first.
Most drinks use an emulsion, a mix that holds cannabis oil in water. Lo Friesen, writing in Cannabis Science and Technology in late 2024, describes nanoemulsion droplets of roughly 20 to 200 nanometers. Friesen notes that smaller droplets give more surface area, and that more surface area speeds up absorption.
| Factor | THC drink | THC gummy |
|---|---|---|
| State in your stomach | Already liquid, oil spread through water | Solid, must be chewed and broken down |
| Droplet size | Often 20 to 200 nanometers (Friesen, 2024) | Oil or fat carrier, far larger |
| Common pattern | Comes on sooner, often shorter | Slower start, often longer |
| Dose control | You can sip, cap it and stop | Hard to split once it is chewed |
How small is small? In a 2023 rat study in Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoids, Mahmoud ElSohly and colleagues at ElSohly Laboratories used a cannabinoid nanoemulsion with a mean droplet size near 60 nanometers. Cannabinoids showed up in blood by the first sample, five minutes after dosing.
Read that carefully. Those were rats, and the compound was CBD, not THC. We are showing you the mechanism, not a human result. Published head to head human data on a THC can against a THC gummy is still thin, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.
See our walkthrough on how to read a Maine cannabis label. Emulsion type is not always printed, so ask us.
Which physical effects do people underrate?
Dry mouth, heart rate, appetite and next day fog. People plan for the head change and get blindsided by the body.
Dry mouth is not dehydration. THC appears to act on CB1 receptors on the nerves that switch your saliva glands on. A 2022 paper in Scientific Reports from Alex Straiker's lab at Indiana University found those receptors on nerve fibers feeding the submandibular gland in mice. Drinking more water helps a little. Chewing gum helps more.
Heart rate goes up, and it goes up early. Wolowich and colleagues, publishing in the European Journal of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics in 2025, gave 25 healthy volunteers THC by injection. The median peak rise was 68 beats per minute, and the cardiovascular effect ran about two to three hours.
That was an injected dose, far more direct than a can. Your seltzer will not do that. The useful part is the shape of the curve, and the fact that a faster rise in blood level tends to mean a faster pulse.
Appetite is the one people enjoy and still fail to plan for. Have food in the house first.
Next day fog is the surprise. A review led by Danielle McCartney at the University of Sydney went through 20 studies and 345 performance tests. Only about 3.5 percent of those tests showed a real next day drop, and the five papers behind them were old and weakly controlled.
So if you wake up foggy, the cause may be a late night rather than the drink. If the fog is a daily pattern, a tolerance break is the usual fix.
How much is the drink, and how much is the cold can in your hand?
More than you would like to admit. The ritual of cracking a can, hearing the hiss and holding something cold does real work on how you feel.
There is evidence for this. Toni Spinella and colleagues at Dalhousie University gave 43 healthy adults a cannabinoid free hempseed oil across two sessions. In one session they were told it contained CBD.
Expectancy alone raised reported sedation. No cannabinoid was involved.
This matters for dosing. If part of what you want is the can, the condensation and being handed something at a party, a 2 mg drink may do the job that you thought needed 10 mg. Our comparison of THC drinks and alcohol picks at the same thread.
Why will you not see any health claims on this page?
Because we are a licensed Maine adult use retailer, and the Office of Cannabis Policy does not let us make them. This is the section where most pages on this topic go wrong.
You will find competitor guides promising that a THC seltzer fixes your sleep, calms your nerves or saves you from a hangover. Those are therapeutic claims. We will not publish them, and a licensed Maine store that does is taking a risk with its license.
Here is what we can honestly say. People report changes. Those reports vary a lot between people, and they are not a health outcome.
If you are thinking about cannabis for a health reason, that conversation belongs with your own clinician. Maine runs its medical program separately, and our explainer on whether you need a medical card in Maine sets out the difference.
Hemp derived cans sold outside licensed stores are a separate question again. See hemp THC drinks against dispensary THC drinks for how the testing and labeling differ.
What should you do if a drink hits harder than you wanted?
Sit down somewhere cool, sip water and wait it out. Nobody has died from too much THC, and the feeling passes.
Food, a quiet room and company all help. Black pepper and a cold shower are folk remedies, not science, but they do no harm.
Full steps are in our guide on what to do if you are too high. If you are worried about a child, a pet or a mixed dose, call the Northern New England Poison Center on 1-800-222-1222.
One practical Maine note. Public consumption is a civil violation with a fine of up to 100 dollars, so finishing a can on Commercial Street is a bad idea. If you are planning around a festival or market, our roundup of cannabis events in Maine explains where consumption is and is not allowed.
How do you plan a dose before you open the can?
Work backward from how long you want to be out of commission, then pick the smallest dose that gets you there. Our Maine edible dosage chart lays the milligram bands out side by side.
Two rules carry most of the weight. Wait a full hour before a second serving, and eat something first.
Frequently asked questions
How long do THC drink effects last?
Most people describe a peak around one to two hours in, then a slow fade. A 5 mg can often reads as done in three to four hours. A 20 mg dose can stretch past six. Your body weight, your last meal and your tolerance all move those numbers. Maine labels must warn that effects may not show up for as long as four hours, so give it time before you reach for a second can.
Is 5 mg of a THC drink a lot?
For a daily flower smoker, 5 mg is light. For someone who has not used cannabis in a year, 5 mg can be plenty. It sits at half of the 10 mg serving that Maine law allows per edible serving. We point first timers at 2 mg to 5 mg and tell them to drink half the can, wait a full hour, then decide.
Do THC drinks give you a hangover?
Some people report next day fog. The evidence for it is thinner than you would guess. A review led by Danielle McCartney at the University of Sydney looked at 20 studies and 345 performance tests. Only 12 of those tests, about 3.5 percent, showed a real next day drop, and all five papers behind them were old and poorly controlled.
Why do THC drinks make my mouth dry?
THC appears to act on CB1 receptors sitting on the nerves that tell your saliva glands to switch on. A 2022 paper in Scientific Reports from Alex Straiker's lab at Indiana University mapped those receptors on nerve fibers feeding the submandibular gland in mice. Less signal, less saliva. A drink does not fix it, because the dry feeling comes after the can is empty.
Can you mix a THC drink with alcohol?
We tell people not to. Stacking a beer on a 10 mg seltzer makes it very hard to read how high you are, and the spins come on fast. If you want the social part without the mix, a can on its own is the simpler plan. Never drive after either one. Maine covers operating under the influence of cannabis under Title 29-A, section 2411.
How many THC drinks can I buy in Maine at once?
Maine caps an adult use purchase at 2.5 ounces of cannabis, with no more than 10 grams of concentrate, under Title 28-B, section 1501. Drinks count toward that limit by their cannabis equivalent, so the practical ceiling is a large number of cans rather than a short one. Ask a Guide at the counter and we will do the math with you.
