Quick answer: THC drinks vs alcohol is mostly a question of measurement. Alcohol has a standard drink, defined by NIAAA as 14 grams of pure alcohol. Retail THC has no equivalent unit, so Maine caps a licensed serving at 10 mg instead. Timing differs too. Maine's OUI law treats both the same.
Key takeaways:
-
A US standard drink is 0.6 fl oz of pure alcohol, or 14 grams, per NIAAA.
-
Retail THC has no standard unit. Researchers report in 5 mg units, per NIDA.
-
Maine caps licensed THC drinks at 10 mg per serving, 200 mg per package.
-
Maine OUI law covers both, and sets no THC blood limit.
What is the real difference between a THC drink and an alcoholic drink?
A THC drink is a beverage with a measured dose of cannabis extract emulsified into it, sold in Maine at 10 mg of THC per serving or less. An alcoholic drink carries ethanol.
Both pass through your liver. Alcohol is broken down there by two enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. Swallowed THC takes a first pass through the liver too, where part of it converts into 11-hydroxy-THC, a second active compound.
That first pass is where the comparison gets slippery. Marilyn Huestis, reviewing cannabinoid pharmacokinetics in Chemistry and Biodiversity in 2007, put oral THC bioavailability at roughly 4 to 20 percent. New to the format? Start with our explainer on what THC drinks are.
THC drinks vs alcohol: the side by side
Seven things people ask about, sourced below.
| Alcohol | Dispensary THC drink in Maine | |
|---|---|---|
| Onset | Minutes, from the stomach and small intestine | Harvard Health cites 15 to 20 minutes for some. Maine labels warn up to 4 hours |
| Duration | About one standard drink cleared per hour (Cederbaum, 2012) | Huestis: peak at 1 to 6 hours, effects extended versus smoking |
| Standard unit | Yes. 0.6 fl oz, or 14 g of pure alcohol (NIAAA) | No retail unit. NIDA uses 5 mg of delta-9 THC for research |
| Driving limit | 0.08 alcohol level (29-A §2411) | No per se THC limit. Same OUI statute applies |
| Where you can consume it | Licensed bars, restaurants, private homes | Private property only. Public use is a civil violation (28-B §1501(2)) |
| Dose control | By the pour, counted in standard drinks | By the package. 10 mg per serving, 200 mg per package (28-B §703) |
| If you have too much | Alcohol overdose. A 911 emergency, per NIAAA | Reported anxiety, racing heart, nausea, vomiting. Emergency visits happen (Harvard Health) |
These columns are not a ranking. They measure different things about different drugs.
How fast does each one hit, and how long does it last?
Alcohol is quicker and more predictable. Arthur Cederbaum noted in Clinical Liver Disease in 2012 that absorption runs faster from the small intestine than the stomach, and that food slows it down. He put average clearance near 7 grams an hour, roughly one standard drink, varying three to four fold between people.
THC drinks are less settled. Harvard Health reported in July 2024 that some people feel a cannabis drink in 15 to 20 minutes, because beverage cannabinoids are formulated to dissolve. Huestis found oral THC peaking at 1 to 2 hours in one study and 4 to 6 hours in another.
Every edible label here warns that effects may not be felt for up to 4 hours (18-691 CMR ch. 30). More in our piece on how long THC drinks take to kick in.
Why does alcohol have a standard drink and THC does not?
Because alcohol researchers settled on a unit decades ago. NIAAA defines a US standard drink as any beverage holding 0.6 fl oz, or 14 grams, of pure alcohol. That is 12 fl oz of beer near 5 percent, 5 fl oz of wine near 12 percent, or 1.5 fl oz of spirits at 40 percent.
THC has nothing like that on a shelf label. Tom Freeman of the University of Bath and Valentina Lorenzetti of Australian Catholic University proposed a 5 mg standard THC unit in the journal Addiction in October 2019. NIDA asked its funded researchers to report findings in 5 mg units from 2021. Read the fine print, though. NIDA is explicit that a standard unit "is not a limit, nor any kind of recommendation for consumption," and exists so studies can be compared.
Maine regulates the package instead of the person: 10 mg per serving, 200 mg per package, a measuring cap on anything multi-serve. Our Maine edible dosage chart lines up the milligrams, and our Portland THC drinks guide covers formats.
What happens if you mix THC and alcohol?
Blood THC goes up. Rebecca Hartman and colleagues reported this in Clinical Chemistry in June 2015, in a study of 19 adults run with NIDA. Participants drank placebo or low-dose alcohol ten minutes before inhaling vaporized cannabis. At the high cannabis dose, median peak blood THC was 42.2 micrograms per liter without alcohol and 67.5 with it.
Two honest caveats. That study used vaporized cannabis, not a drink, and it tested one low alcohol dose, aimed at a peak breath alcohol near 0.065 percent.
Our advice is boring: separate evenings, until you know how each lands alone. If a night gets away from someone, our guide for when you are too high walks through it.
What do the calorie numbers actually say?
They say alcohol is countable and THC drinks are not. CDC researchers put a 12 ounce beer near 150 calories, 5 ounces of wine near 120, and 1.5 ounces of liquor near 100, in NCHS Data Brief 110 from November 2012.
THC drinks have no equivalent average. A zero-sugar seltzer and an infused lemonade are not in the same range. Maine requires a nutrition panel, so the number is printed on the can. Those are figures, not a reason to choose.
What does Maine law say about each one?
Driving is where the two converge completely. Maine's OUI statute, 29-A §2411, makes it an offense to operate while under the influence of intoxicants, or with an alcohol level of 0.08 or more.
Note the asymmetry. There is a number for alcohol and no per se THC blood limit. The impairment half of the statute covers cannabis anyway, so the charge is the same.
Where you can consume them splits the other way:
-
Alcohol. Licensed bars and restaurants, and private homes.
-
Cannabis, drinks included. Public use is a civil violation under 28-B §1501(2), fine up to $100. Maine has no licensed consumption lounges.
-
In a vehicle. Both are out. The open container law, 29-A §2112-A, covers drivers and passengers.
Our guide on where you can legally smoke weed in Maine applies to drinks too.
What the research does and does not show
The evidence is thin, and thinner on the comparison than on either drug alone. Alcohol has a century of epidemiology behind it. THC beverages have been legal in Maine since 2020.
Supported: alcohol has a standard unit and a measured clearance rate. Oral THC absorbs across a wide, poorly predictable range. Alcohol before cannabis raised blood THC in one study of 19 people.
Not supported: nobody has compared a 10 mg THC drink against a standard drink on outcomes, and nobody has replicated Hartman's finding using a beverage. Harvard Health noted in 2024 that there are generally more unknowns with cannabis drinks, and that cannabis-related emergency visits rose among older adults after legalization in California and Canada.
Anyone reading this for a health reason should talk to a healthcare provider who knows their history. We sell cannabis. We are not a clinic.
We are not telling you to swap one for the other
Worth saying straight, because plenty of marketing implies it. Rose Mary Jane is not telling you a THC drink replaces a drink, or that trading one for the other is an upgrade. We cannot make that claim.
What is true is that fewer Americans are drinking. Gallup found in August 2025 that a record low 54 percent of US adults say they drink, down from 67 percent in 2022. That is a reported trend, not our argument. Some of those people come in curious, especially around Dry January and THC drinks.
What this looks like at our St John Street counter
Walk into 327 St John St with a valid, unexpired government photo ID and a Cannabis Guide will talk you through the shelf. We are open daily, 8:30am to 10pm, 207-805-1644.
The question we get most is a version of this: what is this like compared to two beers? Nobody can give you that conversion. We can tell you what the can holds and what the label warns.
The counter advice stays simple. Start at 2 mg to 5 mg, finish it slowly, and leave alcohol out of that evening. If your tolerance has crept up, our guide to taking a tolerance break covers the reset. The Portland store page has parking and directions.
Frequently asked questions
How many mg of THC equals one alcoholic drink?
No agency has published that conversion, and nobody should treat one as settled. NIAAA defines a standard drink as 14 grams of pure alcohol. NIDA asks researchers to report cannabis findings in 5 mg units, and says the unit is not a limit or a recommendation.
Can you mix a THC drink with alcohol?
It is legal for an adult over 21 in Maine, but the research gives you a reason to pause. Hartman and colleagues reported in Clinical Chemistry in 2015 that low-dose alcohol before cannabis raised median peak blood THC from 42.2 to 67.5 micrograms per liter. Our Guides suggest separate evenings.
How long does a THC drink take to work compared with a beer?
Alcohol is usually felt within minutes, absorbed from the stomach and small intestine. THC drinks are slower and far less predictable. Harvard Health reported in July 2024 that some people notice effects in 15 to 20 minutes. Maine labels warn effects may take up to 4 hours.
Is there a legal THC limit for driving in Maine?
No. Maine sets a numeric alcohol threshold of 0.08 under 29-A section 2411, but there is no per se THC blood limit. The same OUI statute still covers operating while under the influence of intoxicants, cannabis included. Do not drive after either one.
How many calories are in a THC drink?
It depends entirely on the sugar in the can, and there is no pattern across brands. Some THC seltzers are near zero, while an infused lemonade can run well over 100 calories. CDC figures put a 12 ounce beer near 150 calories and 5 ounces of wine near 120.
Before you decide anything
The useful comparison is not which one wins. One comes with a unit you can count. The other comes with a label you have to read.
To try a THC drink on its own terms, check the current Rose Mary Jane menu and bring questions to the counter. Our Guides would rather spend ten minutes on a label than sell you something you finish too fast.
