Quick answer: Choose by serving size first, then format. THC drinks in Maine are capped at 10 mg THC per serving and 200 mg per package. A single 12 oz can suits one person. A multi-serve bottle comes with a measuring cap so you can pour 10 mg at a time. Our St John Street shelf covers both.
Key takeaways:
-
Maine caps licensed THC drinks at 10 mg per serving and 200 mg per package.
-
Single-serve drinks up to 10 mg may use a child-resistant cap or a metal crown cap.
-
Multi-serve bottles must include a measuring cap or dropper. Hash marks do not count.
-
Labels carry the warning "Effects of this product may not be felt for up to 4 hours."
-
Adult use is 21 and over, taxed at 14 percent since January 2026.
What is a THC drink?
A THC drink is a beverage with a measured dose of cannabis extract blended into it, sold in servings of 10 mg THC or less in Maine. The extract is usually emulsified, meaning it is broken into droplets small enough to stay mixed in water rather than float on top.
That is the whole trick. Everything else is flavor, volume and packaging. Our explainer on what THC drinks are goes deeper.
How do you choose a THC drink?
Pick the serving size you want, then the format that delivers it. Flavor comes last, because a 10 mg can you finish too fast makes for a worse evening than a flavor you merely tolerate.
| Format | Dose you will see | Onset the maker claims | Who it suits | What to check on the label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-serve can, 12 oz | 2 to 10 mg | 15 to 45 min | One person, one sitting | mg per can, cap over the stay tab |
| Single-serve bottle | 5 to 10 mg | 15 to 45 min | Anyone who wants it sealed | Metal crown cap, mg per bottle |
| Multi-serve bottle | Up to 200 mg per package | 15 to 60 min | Sharing, or pouring a smaller size | Servings per container, measuring cap |
| Shot, 2 to 4 oz | 10 mg, or up to 200 mg multi-serve | 15 to 45 min | Small volume, easy to overdo | mg per shot, servings per bottle |
| Powder or drink mix sachet | 5 to 10 mg | 15 to 45 min | Mixing into your own coffee or seltzer | mg per sachet, servings per box |
Those onset windows come from the makers, not the state. Maine still makes every label carry a 4 hour warning, and that gap is worth respecting.
Three things sort most people out at the counter: your milligram history, whether you are sharing, and whether you want to finish it tonight.
Which Maine rules shape what is on the shelf?
Four rules decide most of a Maine THC drink before you see it. The Office of Cannabis Policy sets them under Title 28-B and 18-691 CMR.
| The rule | What it means for the drink in your hand |
|---|---|
| 10 mg per serving, 200 mg per package (28-B §703) | No licensed Maine drink sells a 25 mg serving. The package cap rose from 100 mg on 25 October 2023, so any source citing 100 mg is stale |
| Single-serve up to 10 mg (18-691 CMR ch. 1, §9.4.1(D)) | May use a child-resistant container, a stay tab can, or a bottle with a metal crown cork cap |
| Stay tab cans (OCP guidance, May 2023) | A plain stay tab is not child-resistant on its own, so makers add a cap or cover over it |
| Multi-serve over 10 mg (§9.4.1(E)) | Needs a resealable child-resistant bottle plus a measuring cap or dropper. Printed hash marks do not qualify |
Two more rules show up at the register. The container must be opaque and tamper-evident, or we put it in exit packaging that is. The per-transaction limit is 2.5 ounces of cannabis equivalent (28-B §1501).
How do you read the label on a Maine THC drink?
Find four numbers: mg of THC per serving, servings per container, total mg per package, and the production date. The rest is context, not a decision.
Maine also requires the red and black universal cannabis symbol, the batch number, the words "Passed mandatory testing", an ingredient and allergen list, a nutrition panel, and two set warnings. One reads "This product contains cannabis. Keep away from children." The other is the 4 hour onset line.
Our guide to reading a Maine cannabis label breaks down every field. Weighing a drink against a gummy? The Maine edible dosage chart lines the two up by milligrams.
How fast does a THC drink work?
Faster than most edibles for most people, and slower than a can promising 15 minutes. We wrote a whole piece on how long THC drinks take to kick in, because the honest answer involves your last meal, your tolerance and the emulsion.
Is a hemp seltzer the same as a dispensary drink?
No. A hemp-derived seltzer from a grocery store sits under a different legal framework and testing regime than the drinks on our shelf. The full version is in our comparison of hemp THC drinks and dispensary THC drinks.
How do you buy THC drinks for a group?
Do the serving math before picking the package. A 200 mg multi-serve bottle is 20 servings at 10 mg, or 40 at 5 mg, which covers six people who each want one drink.
-
Mixed tolerance. Buy single cans at different strengths, not one shared bottle.
-
Everyone experienced. One multi-serve bottle plus its cap costs less per serving.
-
Alcohol in play. Keep the two apart. Our piece on THC drinks compared with alcohol explains why.
-
Pouring for others. Say the milligrams out loud. Guests cannot read a label they never saw.
-
Someone had too much. Water, a quiet room, company. Our guide for when you are too high walks through it.
Keep the bottle in its original packaging so the label stays with it, away from kids and pets. Public consumption is still a civil violation in Maine, fine up to 100 dollars. The back deck counts. The sidewalk does not.
Picking a drink at our St John Street counter
Walk in at 327 St John St with a valid, unexpired government photo ID and a Cannabis Guide will show you this week's arrivals. We are open daily, 8:30am to 10pm, and the phone is 207-805-1644.
We would rather not name a brand and send you across town for something we sold out of Tuesday. Beverage stock turns fast. Ask a Guide, or check the online menu and order ahead for pickup.
The menu is sorted by how you want to feel, so Social and Unwind are good places to start. We hold an adult-use license only, so we cannot accept a medical certification. Our guide to a first dispensary trip covers the ID check, and the Portland store page has parking and directions.
Points build on every pre-tax dollar through Amplify 2.0, worth knowing if you are buying a case.
Frequently asked questions
How many mg of THC is in a drink in Maine?
A serving can hold up to 10 mg of THC, a cap set in Maine statute 28-B section 703. Most single cans are filled at 5 mg or 10 mg, and a few sit at 2 mg. A multi-serve bottle may hold up to 200 mg total, but each poured serving must still land at 10 mg or less.
Can you buy THC drinks in Portland without a medical card?
Yes. Maine adult-use stores sell to anyone 21 or over with a valid, unexpired government photo ID, and there is no residency rule. Rose Mary Jane holds an adult-use license only, so we cannot accept a medical certification at the register. Visitors buy on the same terms as our St John Street neighbors.
How many THC drinks can I buy at once in Maine?
The per-transaction limit is 2.5 ounces of cannabis equivalent under 28-B section 1501, with no more than 10 grams of that as concentrate. Almost nobody hits that ceiling with cans. The limit that bites first is the 200 mg per package cap, which sets how many servings one bottle can hold.
Why does a multi-serve THC bottle come with a measuring cap?
Because Maine rule 18-691 CMR ch. 1, section 9.4.1(E) says it has to. Any drink holding more than 10 mg needs a resealable child-resistant package plus a measuring cap or dropper. The same rule says printed hash marks do not count as a measuring device. Keep the cap. Without it you are guessing.
Can I drink a THC seltzer at a bar or on the Eastern Prom?
No. Public consumption of cannabis in any form is a civil violation in Maine, with a fine of up to 100 dollars under 28-B section 1501(2). That covers drinks, parks, sidewalks and bar patios. No licensed consumption lounges operate here. Open it at a private residence where the owner is fine with it, never in a vehicle.
What should I pick for a first THC drink?
A sealed single-serve can at 2 mg to 5 mg, finished slowly, with nothing else that evening. Read the label first so you know the mg per serving and the servings per container. Maine labels also warn that effects may not be felt for up to 4 hours, which is the line people skip and regret.
Before you pick one
The right THC drink is the one whose serving size matches what you want from the next two hours. Format follows from that. Flavor follows from format.
Stock moves weekly, so check the current Rose Mary Jane menu and bring a question to the counter, not a brand name.
