Quick answer: A THC mocktail is an alcohol free drink built around a measured dose of THC, usually from a dispensary beverage or a tincture. Maine caps a serving at 10 mg of THC. Build to that number, measure every pour, and wait two hours before deciding whether you want more.
Key takeaways:
-
Maine sets 10 mg of THC per serving and 200 mg per package under Title 28-B.
-
Adding mixer or ice does not reduce the milligrams already in the glass.
-
Measure the base with a dropper or a jigger. Never pour THC by eye.
-
A tincture stirred into cream or coconut milk behaves differently from one in soda.
-
Label any batch with total milligrams, milligrams per serving and the pour size.
THC mocktails at a glance: what are you actually making?
A THC mocktail is a mixed drink with no alcohol in it, where the active ingredient is a measured amount of THC instead. The base is either a canned dispensary beverage with the dose printed on it, or a tincture you measure yourself. Everything else in the glass is just flavor.
Here are the six builds in this guide, side by side.
| Build | THC per serving | Base type | Flavor direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portland Paloma | 10 mg | Canned seltzer | Grapefruit, lime, salt |
| Cranberry Smash | 5 mg | Tincture | Tart, maple, herbal |
| Spiced Maple Mule | 5 mg | Tincture | Ginger, maple, lime |
| Blueberry Shrub Spritz | 10 mg | Canned seltzer | Sweet and sharp, vinegar lift |
| Bitter Orange Spritz | 5 mg | Tincture | Bitter orange, bone dry |
| Off Heat Mulled Cider | 5 mg | Tincture | Warm spice, apple |
Two formats, two different jobs. A can gives you a dose that a lab already checked and a label already states. A tincture gives you control down to the milligram, which is what you want for 2.5 mg and 5 mg drinks. What THC drinks are covers the difference in more detail.
How do you size a dose when Maine caps a serving at 10 mg?
Work backward from the serving, not the glass. Maine sets 10 mg of THC per serving and 200 mg per package for adult-use edibles under Title 28-B, with the package cap raised from 100 mg to 200 mg in October 2023.
That 10 mg figure is a ceiling the state set, not a recommendation for you. Plenty of our regulars drink at 2.5 mg or 5 mg and stop there.
Here is how the math works in practice.
| You want | From a 10 mg can | From a tincture at 10 mg per mL |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 mg | One quarter of the can | 0.25 mL on the dropper |
| 5 mg | Half the can | 0.5 mL on the dropper |
| 10 mg | The whole can | 1.0 mL on the dropper |
Always read your own label. Tincture strength varies a lot between products, so the milligrams per milliliter on your bottle is the only number that matters. Our guide to reading a Maine cannabis label shows where to find it.
What are the six builds, step by step?
Each one is a single serving. Measure the THC base first, before anything else goes in the glass.
Portland Paloma, 10 mg
Rim a tall glass with flaky salt. Add 4 oz fresh pink grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz lime juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Stir. Fill with ice, then pour in one 10 mg THC seltzer. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
The salt and the bitterness of real grapefruit do a lot of work here. Bottled grapefruit juice is sweeter and flatter.
Cranberry Smash, 5 mg
Measure 0.5 mL of a 10 mg per mL tincture into the bottom of a rocks glass. Add 1 oz unsweetened cranberry juice, 0.5 oz lime juice and 0.5 oz Maine maple syrup. Stir hard for 15 seconds so the tincture disperses. Add ice and 4 oz soda water.
Stirring before the ice matters. A tincture dropped onto a full glass of cold soda will sit on the surface.
Spiced Maple Mule, 5 mg
Measure 0.5 mL of tincture into a copper mug or a tall glass. Add 0.5 oz lime juice and 0.5 oz maple syrup, and stir. Add ice, then 5 oz ginger beer. Grate a little fresh ginger over the top.
Use a sharp ginger beer, not a sweet ginger ale. The heat covers any plant flavor in the tincture.
Blueberry Shrub Spritz, 10 mg
Make a shrub first. Combine 1 cup Maine blueberries with 1 cup sugar, leave it covered overnight, strain, then stir in 1 cup apple cider vinegar. It keeps for weeks in the fridge.
To build, put 1 oz of shrub in a wine glass with ice, then pour in one 10 mg THC seltzer. Stir once and add a lemon twist.
Bitter Orange Spritz, 5 mg
Measure 0.5 mL of tincture into a wine glass. Add 1.5 oz of a non alcoholic bitter aperitif and 0.5 oz fresh orange juice. Stir well. Add ice and 3 oz soda water, then an orange half wheel.
This is the build for people who miss a negroni. It is bitter and dry, with no sweetness to hide behind.
Off Heat Mulled Cider, 5 mg
Warm 6 oz Maine apple cider in a small pot with a cinnamon stick, two cloves and a strip of orange peel. Do not boil it. Take the pot off the burner, let it settle for a minute, then stir in 0.5 mL of tincture and keep stirring for 20 seconds.
Serve in a mug. For more warm drink ideas, see our notes on spicing up fall beverages with THC.
Why should you never dose by eye?
Because a dropper squeeze is not a measurement, and your eye is worse than you think. A tincture bottle will happily give you 1.4 mL when you meant 0.5 mL, and that is the difference between 5 mg and 14 mg.
Use the graduated marks on the dropper and look at the meniscus in good light. If your bottle has no marks, ask us for one that does, or use a 1 mL oral syringe from a pharmacy.
The same rule applies to a can. Half a can is half a can measured into a jigger, not half a can judged by the sound. Our edible dosage chart for Maine lays out the usual starting points.
Does mixing a tincture into something fatty change the onset?
It can, and the direction is reasonably well documented for cannabinoids taken by mouth. Angela Birnbaum and colleagues at the University of Minnesota reported in Epilepsia in 2019 that a high fat meal raised peak cannabidiol concentration about 14 times, and total exposure about 4 times, compared with fasting.
Two honest limits on that finding. It used cannabidiol capsules in eight patients with epilepsy, not a THC drink, and eight people is a very small sample. So read it as a direction, not a multiplier you can apply to your glass.
The practical version: a tincture stirred into cream, whole milk, coconut milk or a nut milk is a different drink from the same tincture in soda water. If you are building something creamy, drop the dose you would normally use and give it longer before you judge it.
Do carbonation and ice change how fast it hits?
They change the experience more than the chemistry, and that is still worth planning for. A fizzy drink goes down faster than a flat one, so the dose arrives in your stomach quicker and in one go.
Ice is the one people get backward. Melting ice dilutes the flavor, not the dose. A 10 mg can poured over a full glass of ice is still 10 mg when the ice has melted, just weaker tasting and easier to drink fast.
Emulsified dispensary drinks often show up sooner than a baked edible, because the THC is already broken into fine droplets in water. Sooner is not instant. How long THC drinks take to kick in and how long they last cover the timing properly.
How do you serve THC drinks to guests responsibly?
You tell people the dose, out loud, before they drink it. That is the whole rule, and it is not optional.
Never free pour for a guest. A free pour means neither of you knows what is in the glass, and they cannot make a decision about their own evening. Measure in front of them if that is easier.
If you are batching for a group, label the jug with masking tape and a marker:
-
Total THC in the jug, in milligrams.
-
Milligrams per serving.
-
The pour size that makes a serving, in ounces.
-
The time you made it.
Then set out a second jug with no THC at all and mark it clearly. Keep a ladle or a jigger with the THC jug so nobody eyeballs it. Ask about medication and pregnancy before you offer, and never top up a glass without saying so.
Keep the cans and bottles out of reach of children and pets, in their original packaging. Our guide on what to do if you are too high is worth reading before you host, not after. The Northern New England Poison Center is at 1-800-222-1222.
Is a THC mocktail a good swap for Dry January?
It works for a lot of people, and it fails for some. January is when we sell the most drinks, and it is when we have the most honest conversations about why.
The swap works if what you miss is the ritual. A cold glass, a sharp flavor, something in your hand at six o'clock. A 2.5 mg or 5 mg build covers that without alcohol.
The swap does not work if you are stepping back from alcohol because of how you use it. Replacing one habit with another is not a month off, and we will say so at the counter. Talk to a professional, not a shop.
We have a separate guide on the month itself. Dry January and THC drinks goes through pacing, the social side and what to tell people at a party.
What do people get wrong about THC mocktails?
The biggest myth is that a bigger glass is a smaller dose. It is not. Volume and milligrams are separate numbers, and only one of them affects you.
Here are the other four we hear most.
-
That you can pace a THC drink like a beer. You cannot. Onset is slow and the window is long.
-
That two different products at 5 mg will feel identical. Format, fat and your own stomach all move it.
-
That mixing in alcohol is fine. Stacking the two is how people lose the thread.
-
That homemade infusions are interchangeable with a lab tested drink. They are not tested or labeled.
One more. If you are making these on a trip, remember the rules change by town and venue. Our guide to cannabis near Sunday River and Sugarloaf covers that for ski weekends.
Frequently asked questions
How many milligrams should a first THC mocktail be?
Start at 2.5 mg or 5 mg, not 10 mg. Maine caps a serving at 10 mg, but a cap is a ceiling, not a suggestion. With a 10 mg can you can pour half into a glass of mixer and save the rest. With a tincture you measure the fraction on the dropper. Then wait two hours before you decide anything. Most people who have a bad night took a second drink too early.
Can I use a whole 10 mg can in one drink?
Yes, if 10 mg is a dose you already know suits you. Adding juice, soda or ice does not lower the milligrams. The total THC in the glass is whatever you poured in, no matter how tall the drink ends up. A bigger glass only spreads the same dose through more liquid. If 10 mg is more than you want, split the can across two glasses and label the second one.
Will a THC mocktail get me drunk like a cocktail?
No. There is no alcohol in it, so there is no blood alcohol and no hangover in the alcohol sense. The feeling, the onset and the length are all different. A THC drink can take well over an hour to show up and can last much longer than a cocktail. Do not pace them like drinks. Our comparison of THC drinks and alcohol sets out where the two actually differ.
How long does a THC mocktail take to kick in?
Plan on one to two hours before you judge it. Maine rules at 18-691 CMR chapter 30 require labels to warn that effects may not be felt for up to 4 hours, and that warning is the number to plan around. Emulsified drinks often arrive faster than a baked edible, but faster is not instant. Food in your stomach, the mixer and your own body all move the timing.
Can I batch THC mocktails in a pitcher for a party?
You can, but only with a measured total and a label. Add up the milligrams you put in, divide by the number of servings the jug holds, and write both numbers on tape on the jug. Use one ladle of a fixed size so nobody guesses. Keep a second jug with no THC in it, clearly marked, and tell every guest which is which before anyone pours.
Can I heat a THC tincture in mulled cider?
Yes, if you add it off the heat. Warm the cider and the spices, pull the pot off the burner, let it stop steaming hard, then stir the measured tincture in. Do not boil it. Boiling drives off aromatics and risks degrading cannabinoids, and a rolling pot is also harder to portion accurately. Stir well, because an oil based tincture will sit on top of a still liquid.
Pick your base at the shop first
The build is the easy part. The base is the decision, and it is easier to make standing in front of the shelf.
